“Terrible Billy” Rutledge – Biography

“Terrible Billy” Rutledge

“Terrible Billy” Rutledge, the purchaser of Woodlands, overlanded sheep to Melbourne in 1838, but Eyre had left there already and was overlanding to Adelaide.

Of interest, Billy gave the management of Woodlands and further property nearby to his younger brother Thomas, who incorporated them all in the larger and very attractive sheep property Carwoola. Eyre’s lime pit can still be identified in the hills above his home site, but the homestead itself has been levelled as part of farming operations and only a few artefacts remain.
