John Clark

John Clark

During his first overlanding to Adelaide, at the Goulburn, Eyre met up with John Clark, who was intending to establish an inn at the river crossing and was selling grog to overlanders in the interim. Clark was especially pleased to see Eyre, who was bringing Clark’s wife and family on his drays free of charge as a favour. When they met, Eyre was travelling to Melbourne ahead of the rest of his party to buy fresh supplies, but encouraged Clark with the news that his family were doing fine and would be joining him soon.

Clark succeeded in establishing an inn named the Traveller’s Rest at the crossing, which was one of only seven inns to be granted a liquor license in 1841.
