Sir John Hindmarsh – Biography

Sir John Hindmarsh

Eyre met Sir John Hindmarsh shortly before his recall to England. He became good friends with the Hindmarsh family who remained behind.

Hindmarsh was given a hearing regarding his governorship of South Australia by the Colonial Office. It was felt most of its shortcomings were circumstantial rather than his fault and he was appointed Governor of the small and insignificant Heligoland instead. Hindmarsh made a success of his governorship there. His wife Susannah joined him in 1841 after having successfully married off her three daughters in South Australia. Sir John retired to Brighton in England in 1857 and died in London in 1860 when 76 years old.
